Mastering Playable Hooks: Our Tips to Winning Players in Seconds
by Maximilian Everett Kinney / Playable Ads Developer
Your playable’s hook is crucial.

It determines whether the viewers will stick around and convert or bounce. If not done right, you risk facing low CVRs and losing the interest of players. So, how do you grab their attention right from the start?

You only have a couple of seconds to act.

Players have a choice to skip a playable after 5 seconds – if you don’t grab their attention in the first 2-3 seconds, they will do it! That’s why you need to make your core game loop clear, attractive, and easy to follow from the get-go.

Create a focal point.

Use art styling to create a focal point around the main object of your playable. It’s an instant eye-catcher that’ll make players stop and take notice.

Provide brief instructions.

Keep it simple and use visual cues instead of text wherever possible – they’re universal and instantly recognizable. Remember: your goal is to get players to understand your game in a blink of an eye.

Design a simple level.

Aim for simple levels with a stripped-down core game loop that players can grasp on the fly. Even if your mechanics are complex, make the playable’s level as easy as possible. Remember, the point is to get players hooked, not to confuse them!

Show the mechanic in action.

You can also use the first seconds of the playable to show the mechanic in action. For instance, give the opponent the first turn so players can learn by example. It’s a simple trick, but it works wonders.
